Green Industries SA (GISA) has released the Circular Economy Resource Recovery Report (CERRR) 2022–23, highlighting how South Australia continues to lead the nation on resource recovery, as the state moves towards a more circular economy.

The CERRR measures recovery and disposal activity in South Australia, to assess how the state is performing on waste management and resource recovery.

In 2022–23, an estimated 5.16 million tonnes of waste materials were generated statewide, and 82.2% of this, or 4.24 million tonnes, was recovered for further use – with 93% of recovered materials going on to be reprocessed locally.

In addition to the CERRR, GISA has also released South Australia’s Kerbside Waste Performance: State and Regional Report 2021–22.

This report presents data on statewide kerbside waste and recycling collection services across the state’s 68 council areas.

It analyses the performance and improvements in council waste management efficiency and sustainability across the state, and proposes changes to help improve the diversion of waste from landfill.

Report findings showed that in 2021–22, 689,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste was collected from the kerbside, which included 205,600 tonnes of organics and 133,400 tonnes of recyclables – representing a total recovery rate of 49.2%.

The findings of these reports will be used to track SA’s progress against the targets set out in South Australia’s Waste Strategy 2020-2025.
